Ferdinando de' Medici (1663–1713), Grand Prince of Tuscany
ca. 1680–82

Giovanni Battista Foggini Italian

Under the tutelage of artisan Filippo Sengher, Prince Ferdinando de' Medici turned this cup and cover when he was just eighteen -- around the same time that Giovanni Battista Foggini immortalized his likeness in this marble bust. The prince likely used a lathe that Sengher had constructed for him in 1679. More sophisticated than earlier ivories turned by Ferdinando, the cup marks his advancing abilities under his teacher's guidance.
