Drawing Winch
before 1565

Leonhard Danner

This piece was made as part of the Wire-Drawing Bench that Augustus, Elector of Saxony commissioned from Nuremberg artist-engineer, cabinetmaker, and screw maker Leonhard Danner in 1565. Augustus had the bench and its accompanying tools installed in his Dresden Kunstkammer in 1566. It was used to crank wire along the bench. While the bench and most of its accessories are now in the collection of the Musée National de la Renaissance in Écouen, France, its drawing winch, wire roll, and a lifting jack also by Danner remained in Dresden. The engraved drawing winch and the wire roll are part of the bench's mechanism. The various parts are reunited here for the first time in North America.
