Mathematical Instrument Chest of Charles I, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel
1686

Johann Heinrich Burchart

This chest holds nearly forty instruments for geometry, military use, and surveying. It was made for Landgrave Charles I likely as a symbol of his schooling in mathematics, given the instruments' fine construction. The proportional compass and gunner's level (of a different design than the other example in this gallery) were devised for the making of calculations on the battlefield. The impressive instrument with four sights is a Holland circle, used for surveying and for planning fortifications.
