Scientific Instrument Case of Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor
1637-1642

Emperor Ferdinand III

Handwritten instructions for the twenty instruments in this case record that the set was made for Emperor Ferdinand III to support his education in cosmography, astronomy, geometry, and arithmetic and their various applications (such as determining disputed borders). Johann Melchior Volckmair's masterpiece, the ensemble reflects the goldsmith and mathematician's genius as a scientist-artist. In addition to the instruments and instructions, the three stacked silver compartments include six maps of Europe and the Holy Land and are topped by a statuette of Hercules supporting the globe.
