Cryptological Dividers
1633

Joachim Deuerlin

Used to encode and decode secret messages, these dividers are topped by striking openwork. When the disk is turned to select a letter with the pointer at the top, the spikes protruding from the bottom move accordingly, changing the distance between them. Letters are thus converted into distances and recorded as lines of corresponding length.
