Three Portrait Miniature Stands
ca. 1748

Johann Salomon Meyer of Zerbst

While portrait miniatures were worn as jewelry as early as the beginning of the fifteenth century, these inventive mother-of-pearl stands pair them with precious natural materials associated with the Kunstkammer. Two of the portraits in the diamond-encrusted frames held aloft by the gold putti likely represent Prince Ludwig von Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The third sitter has yet to be identified.
