Martin Gizl Austrian

Only members of the court of the prince-archbishops of Salzburg could hunt the alpine ibex, and objects incorporating the animals' horns tend to be decorated with dramatic hunting scenes. Count Philipp Carl von Seinsheim, nephew to four bishops of the Schönborn family (major art patrons), commissioned this ensemble. Gizl carved its scenes in the style of valuable rhinoceros-horn vessels imported from China, thereby lending additional cachet to the local material.
