Casket
1593-1602

Hans Straub

Hans Straub employed patterns perfected by his father-in-law, master goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer, to fashion this box. Jamnitzer developed a press for stamping ornamental strips that was used to produce the prefabricated band at the bottom edge of the box and the frieze along the top edge. The frieze circling the lid appears on Jamnitzer's own work. The sides feature personifications of the seven planetary gods, a popular motif for Kunstkammer objects. The additional presence of Juno, goddess of birth and marriage, suggests the casket belonged to a woman, who donated it to the Hohenzollern Kunstkammer in Berlin City Palace.
