Initially during the shutdown, all of the trains in use were using the 7000 series cars. Those were the ones that had been introduced in 2015 and are easily spotted because of their stainless steel exteriors. All trains were 8 cars in order to allow for social distancing, and, initially, the first and last cars were left empty for the safety of the train conductor. That last rule was lifted during the weekend of the major BLM protests and never went back to the old way.

You can't use exclusively 7000-series if you're going back to old service levels. As such, Metro brought 3000-series trains. Those cars were introduced in 1987 and account for one-quarter of Metro's rolling stock. They also resumed using 6-car trains.
