Clemenceau Case Theater Program Clipper
1890
As the epicenter for the entertainment industry, New York was the focus for the Comstock Law's regulations of how performances could be advertised, viewed, or sold, and what actors and performers could wear. It was also the center of resistance to these laws, with many artists and performers defying these regulations. In 1890, for example, actress Sybil Johnson caused a sensation when she posed seemingly nude on stage in the role of "Iza" in Clemenceau Case at the Standard Theatre. |
