America's First Subway
On September 1, 1897, the Tremont Street Subway opened from Park Street to Boylston and Arlington Streets in downtown Boston. It was constructed to ease congestion on Tremont Street, where all the streetcars from the south and west converged. The line was soon extended to Scollay Square and North Station.
In 1912, the Cambridge Main Line, now the Red Line, came into Park Street Station via a tunnel under Beacon Hill. Its lower level terminus was called Park Street Under.
Park Street Station is the busiest in the MBTA system with extensions to Quincy, Cambridge, Somerville, South Boston, Allston, Brighton, Dorchester, Milton, Braintree, Back Bay and Brookline.
The Tremont Street Subway was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966. |
