Prior to the war, Baylor commanded a local militia company, the West Augusta Guard, which later became Company L of the 5th Regiment Virginia Infantry. Pictures above with his fellow militia officers, Captain Baylor (standing in center) wears the epaulets displayed below. Elected Colonel of a militia regiment in early 1861, Baylor was relieved of command by an ordnance of the State Convention on April 27, 1861. He subsequently accepted a commission as Major of the 5th Regiment Virginia Infantry.
