Fielding an Army:
Union and Confederate armies were similar in organization. In the infantry and cavalry, ten companies constituted a regiment. Regiments were usually grouped into brigades, and brigades into larger divisions. Artillery batteries consisted of four guns in the Confederate army and six in the Union army.
