Writer, journalist, teacher, carpenter, and poet Walt Whitman was born May 31, 1819, on "Paumonok" (Long Island), New York. He grew to maturity in Brooklyn and Manhattan, where in 1855 he published the first edition of Leaves of Grass. This breakthrough work of free verse celebrated pluralistic democracy, sexuality, human potential, mystical transcendence, universalism, and the natural world.
