After more than seventy years of advocacy by suffragists, Congress passed the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which granted women nationally the right to vote. It was ratified by three-fourths of the states and signed into law on August 26, 1920. Women in some states, mostly in the West, had already been voting, but now women in all states had that right. Former suffragists then went to work ensuring women would use their right to vote. Suffragists fought hard for equal rights and to address the injustice they saw in their lives. They have inspired generations of women activists to take a stand on issues that matter to them. So, what matters to you, and what can you do to take a stand?
