Universal Suffrage -- An Elusive Goal that Leads to The Revolution
After the Civil War, the American Equal Rights Association, the first truly national suffrage organization, coordinated campaigns in a dozen states and Congress in support of universal suffrage for all African Americans and women. When the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments omitted women, members of the Association disagreed over whether to withhold support. Fueling the discord, Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton accepted money from George L. Train, an opponent of black civil rights, to launch The Revolution, advocating for "Educated Suffrage, Irrespective of Sex or Color." |
