"The Best Cooks Are Suffragists"

Between 1886 and 1920 American suffragists published at least six cookbooks to raise money, attract members, and dispel fears that enfranchised women would shirk domestic responsibilities. Advertisements for this 1915 cookbook from Western Pennsylvania offered the reassuring tagline "The Best Cooks Are Suffragists," with cover art showing a calm Uncle Sam holding the sexes in balance while twelve states and Alaska granted women full or partial (Illinois) suffrage. Recipes were contributed by group members and well-known literary and political figures.
