Family Ties Help Unite Diverging Groups
The Congressional Union's break from NAWSA over strategy was contentious and reminiscent of the movement's post-Civil War split. Elsa Ueland, founding president of the College Equal Suffrage League at the University of Minnesota, was one of 50,000 people who joined the CU or its successor National Woman's Party. Her mother, Clara Ueland (1860–1927), one of NAWSA's estimated two million members, became president of the Minnesota Woman Suffrage Association in 1914. The Uelands sought cooperation among the groups. |
