Putting the President-Elect on Notice
This letter was given to the suffrage pilgrims to carry to Washington for delivery to president-elect Woodrow Wilson. It warns him that women expect his assistance in passing equal suffrage and will watch his administration "with an intense interest." The letter was never delivered. Instead Alice Paul intercepted it from Rosalie Jones, whom she feared was scheming to disrupt the inauguration with an unscripted public confrontation rather than wait for a post-inaugural White House visit. |
