The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was established in response to government efforts to limit free speech. The Civil Liberties Bureau (CLS) was created within the anti-war and pro-civil liberties organization, the American Union Against Militarism (AUAM). Led by Roger Baldwin and Crystal Eastman among others, the CLB separated from the AUAM in late 1917, renaming itself the National Civil Liberties Bureau. By 1920, it had reformed and renamed itself once again, this time as the ACLU, which continues its work today on behalf of civil liberties.
