Vincent Cornelius Reed

For World War I infantryman Vincent Reed, the horrors of combat were a sharp contrast to his experiences with the Army of Occupation. Reed fought in the St. Mihiel Offensive, which decimated his company. Reed records his experience on the first day of battle from the front line trenches: "The barrage which our artillery was to put over was to begin at 1 a.m. Our forces moved into that sector all kinds of artillery and when they opened up, it seemed as though the whole world were rocking from the vibration caused by these mighty guns."
