A Memorial Map

More than 12,000 Native Americans served in the U.S. Army during the Great War and their casualties were high. At least five percent of Native Americans who served were killed in action, as compared to one percent of servicemen in the AEF as a whole. This memorial map, published by the Army, denotes Native American participation, graves, and military decorations awarded in France and Belgium. An inset on the map notes that this a "special sketch of noted battlefields, comprising Verdun & Meuse, Argonne & St. Mihiel operations, where the Indians occupied so many sectors and won such fine distinction."
