Training Across the Nation

Training camps sprang up all across the nation to prepare the nation's rapidly expanding armed forces to fight. This map issued by Union Pacific Railroad in 1917 locates "Post and Stations of the Army, National Guard Camps, Aero Training Stations, Marine Barracks and Naval Training Stations." At this time there was no separate Air Force. There were eventually thirty-two training cantonments, or temporary military installations, spread across the nation.
