Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Clifford Berryman was a Washington, D.C., fixture. He spent more than five decades at the Washington Star, and his work was widely distributed across the United States. Well aware of the comparatively tiny size of the U.S. Army (fewer than 130,000 officers and men when the major belligerents had forces numbering in the millions), Berryman opted to represent American military strength, or lack of it, with two small dogs, "Navy" and "Army," out for a walk with Uncle Sam, the quintessential symbol of the United States. |
