Russian Spies Look Like Americans
Anna Chapman (aka Anna Kushchenko), Peruvian journalist Vicky Palaez, Richard Murphy (aka Vladimir Guryev), Cynthia Murphy (aka Lydia Guryev), and Juan Lazaro (aka Mikhail Anatonoljevich Vasenkov) are shown in U.S. District Court for Southern District of New York in Manhattan on June 28, 2010, the day after their arrest by the FBI. They were Russian sleeper agents accused of passing encrypted information to Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service. The "Agents of Foreign Governments," 18 U.S.C. §951, covers the penalties for acting as an agent of a foreign government, including fines or imprisonment of up to ten years. Instead of serving a prison sentence, Judge Kimba Wood ordered Chapman and nine other spies deported. They were exchanged for four Western agents on the tarmac of the Vienna International Airport in Austria.
