Iranian Immigrants Check Visa Status

Gathered around a table before Judge William Strasser of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), Iranian students and non-student visitors check on their visa status, fearing deportation. When Iranian students took over the United States embassy in Iran, President Jimmy Carter retaliated by issuing Executive Order 12172 on November 26, 1979 (shown here), limiting the entry of Iranians holding non-immigrant visas into the United States. All Iranian students were ordered to appear before the INS by December 31, 1979. Iranian students protested that they were being singled out because of the Iranian Revolution. Non-student visitors who had received an extension on their visas after the Shah fled Iran suffered the same treatment as the students. After he retired in 2006, Judge William Strasser joined a New York immigration law firm.
