John Paul Stevens at His Senate Confirmation Hearing

Nominated by President Gerald Ford, John Paul Stevens appeared before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary in December 1975. Aggie Kenny drew the Dirksen Building hearing, where Stevens faced John McClellan (D-AR), Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy (D-MA), Philip A. Hart (D-MI), Strom Thurmond (R-SC), Chairman James O. Eastland (D-MS), Roman L. Hruska (R-NE), and Hugh Doggett Scott, Jr. (R-PA). The Senate unanimously confirmed his appointment on December 17, 1975. Stevens was generally considered a leader on the court's liberal side, serving until his retirement in 2010. On June 13, 2011, the Law Library of Congress presented Justice Stevens with the Wickersham Award, given for exceptional public service and dedication to the legal profession.
