A Dog for the Ages

Edwina Dumm captures the vicissitudes of a dog's life in this strip and displays her fully developed drawing style that was suited to capturing the energetic antics of her characters. Beginning as a daily in 1918, her comic was expanded with a Sunday feature that ran from 1938 to 1963. Based on Dumm's keen, affectionate observation of dogs, Tippie is commonly recognized as the first continuity strip by a woman, which was is a landmark achievement.
