Horror of War

In this illustration relating to the Persian Gulf War, Sue Coe depicts a single, black-robed, female figure grieving in front of numerous anonymous people, grotesque yet individualized in their gas masks. Above them the orange and yellow sky filled with missiles and fighter jets caps the scene, forecasting destruction and death. The powerful visual impact made by Coe's timeless, universal indictment of war also characterizes many of her editorial illustrations.
