Bringing Up Father

Born of Irish parents, George McManus cast a humorous eye on the immigrant experience in early-twentieth-century America in his very successful comic strip Bringing Up Father (also known as "Jiggs and Maggie" for its married main characters). Characterized by slapstick humor, exquisite drawings, and the story of a family navigating an unfamiliar world, the strip appeared in newspapers worldwide and ran from January 12, 1913, to May 28, 2000 -- eighty-seven years in all.
