Science Fiction Takes on Civil Rights

The 1953 story "Judgment Day," first appeared in Weird Fantasy. It recounts an Earth astronaut's visit to the robot planet of Cybrinia to evaluate its potential membership in the Galactic Empire. Ultimately, the planet is rejected because their robots are segregated by color and function. On the story's final page, the astronaut expresses hope for the future, with the last panel revealing that he is a black man. The Comics Code Authority, established in 1954, rejected republication of the story, but publisher William Gaines reprinted this unauthorized version anyway.
