Baseball cards remain a source of accumulated statistical information, but the presentation has varied from scant to overwhelming. This Walter Johnson card provides minimal data, and Babe Ruth's card, part of a set especially admired for its handsome renderings, contains only a short bland description of his career. Cy Young's card offers highlights from his remarkable career in narrative rather than statistical form. While this Edward Cicotte card from the same year provides minimal data, there would be more to say about the pitcher ten years later, when he was banned from baseball following the Black Sox scandal. The National League batting leaders group card shown here ranked the top fifty hitters based only on batting average, but this recent Miguel Cabrera card is a trove of numerical factoids. |
