Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game

Stats master Bill James devised the term "sabermetrics" in 1980 to describe the analytical work he and other members of the Society for American Baseball Research were doing, but author Michael Lewis introduced it to the general public. In his bestselling book Moneyball, Lewis framed old-school scouting against the newfangled approach of A's manager Billy Beane, describing how small-market Oakland built a winning team, despite its low-end payroll, by finding quality players who were overlooked using traditional evaluation methods.
