Baseball Saved Us
For Japanese Americans held in desolate internment camps during World War II, watching or playing baseball and softball offered some temporary relief. Eventually camp teams played against their guards, other camps, or white clubs from nearby communities, and in 1943 several trusted internees tried out for a Brooklyn Dodger scout. Photographer Ansel Adams captured this game at the Manzanar Camp that same year. Ken Mochizuki, whose parents were held at the Minidoka Camp in Idaho, conveyed the importance of baseball for incarcerated youngsters in the award-winning book shown here. |
