Minnie Miñoso, "The Cuban Comet"

Minnie Miñoso went from working Cuban sugar cane fields to manning third base in the American League, becoming the first black player on the Chicago White Sox. As shown here, he kept in contact with Perico, his home town, where he threw out the first pitch to open the 1958 Cubanitos season. Miñoso was a regular over fifteen seasons (1949–1964) but appeared in a few games in 1976 and 1980, thus having played as a major leaguer in five decades.
