"I Can't Get to First Base with You"

The son of poor German immigrants -- who were disappointed in his plan to play professional baseball -- Lou Gehrig (1903–1941) eventually won over his parents as the New York Yankees' first baseman. In 1935 Gehrig's wife, Eleanor, teamed up with songwriter Fred Fisher to produce this lovestruck ditty heavy on baseball lingo. Gehrig himself had no trouble reaching first base that year; he finished the season hitting .329 and, well into his consecutive-game streak, was apparently played more than the song.
