Liga Mexicana de Béisbol

Sitting atop their dugout, members of the Mexican League's Union Laguna, shown here, are separated from passionate fans by barbed wire fencing. It's not certain when baseball arrived in Mexico -- some sources suggest U.S. soldiers introduced it during the Mexican-American War (1846–1848). But béisbol grew in popularity, and the professional Mexican League, founded in 1925, raised its visibility by offering Cuban and Negro League stars higher pay and better playing conditions than could be had at home.
