Joltin' Joe DiMaggio

"Most of us played barehanded because we could not afford baseball gloves," recalled Joe DiMaggio of his San Francisco childhood, before he became a New York Yankee, a Hall of Famer, and a national icon. A first-generation Italian American, DiMaggio was also known as the Yankee Clipper (like the speedy sailing ships) for his fluid quickness, rather than for his news clippings that fans pasted into scrapbooks. In 1989 DiMaggio himself helped assemble for publication a two-volume set of scrapbooks on his playing career.
