The Company Team
Industrial leagues and company teams, whose players labored in factories, mills, ironworks, shipyards, and the like, offered recreation (and sometimes extra pay) for employees, advertising for employers, and entertainment for local fans. Some of these leagues also served as pipelines to the majors. In 1914, more than 83,000 people watched Telling's Strollers defeat Hanna's Street Cleaners in a Cleveland amateur championship game. In Indiana, social reformer Lewis Hine photographed this team of young glassworkers as part of an effort to document the plight of working-class children. |
