Letter to Branch Rickey

"I signed him because I knew of no reason why I shouldn't," Branch Rickey said of hiring Jackie Robinson. "I want to win baseball games." During spring training in 1950, Robinson penned a heartfelt letter to his mentor, who had left the Brooklyn Dodgers. "I want to thank you very much for all you have meant not only to me and my family," wrote Robinson, "but to the entire country and particularly the members of our race."
