They Might Be Giants

Led by team captain and pitcher Ida Schnall (1888–1973), an Austrian immigrant (shown here, holding bats), the New York Female Giants comprised primarily Jewish and Irish American players who dazzled spectators. The press extolled catcher May McCallum -- "the manner in which she whips the ball to the bases is a revelation" -- and Schnall for her "intimate knowledge of inside baseball." Schnall excelled in dozens of sports, including cliff diving, and appeared on Broadway and in Hollywood films. She was also a vocal advocate for women's athletics.
