The Lincolns Remodel, 1846-1854:
Upon his return from Congress in 1849, Lincoln contracted with John R. Roll to whitewash four ceilings and the kitchen, do some plastering work, and repair several hearths. All the fireplaces, except the one in the sitting room, were bricked in and fitted with stoves, then becoming popular.
