Address at the Cooper Institute, New York City, February 27, 1860

The Cooper Institute speech launched Abraham Lincoln's bid for the Republican Party presidential nomination; newspapers and campaign officials widely circulated copies of it. Lincoln attacked the Democratic Party stance that America was founded as a slaveholding country. He appealed to the South to hold fast to Republican principles by rejecting the extension of slavery into the territories.
