The history of the Lincoln Memorial began in 1901 after Senator James McMillan assembled a team of two architects, a landscape architect, and a sculptor to plan for the growth of Washington DC, and the improvement of its public lands. One of their recommendations was to extend the city's central corridor beyond the Washington Monument to the Potomac River, and to create a memorial to Abraham Lincoln at this site. Their published findings exist within the Senate Park Commission Report for the Mall and Capitol Grounds, 1901-1902. In this large 1928 rendering, elements of the McMillan Plan landscape found realization. Although the city changed considerably over time, this area remains much the same today.
