Lincoln and his chief private secretaries, John Hay (right) and John G Nicolay (left), 1863

"The Tycoon is in fine whack. I have rarely seen him more serene & busy."
-- Letter from John Nicolay, August 7, 1863

Lincoln's principal aides enjoyed close relationships with him. Nicolay acted as gatekeeper to the president's office, while Hay read and answered his mail. In this letter, Hay continues his admiration for his boss the Tycoon, "There is no man in the country, so wise, so gentle, and so firm."
