Standing six feet, five inches and weighing nearly 300 pounds, General Winfield Scott was a larger than life figure with a long and storied career in the United States military. He was an associate to every president from Thomas Jefferson to Abraham Lincoln and served i major military conflicts from the War of 1812 to the early stages of the US Civil War. Scott played a pivotal role in establishing the Old Soldiers' Home, on whose grounds the Cottage sits.
