NAACP Spingarn Medal

In 1979 Rosa Parks received the sixty-fourth Spingarn Medal, the NAACP's highest honor, at the seventieth annual convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Federal Judge Damon Keith, a friend and former medal recipient, made the presentation, and Vice President Walter Mondale delivered the address. Shortly thereafter, Rosa said joyously "I am truly grateful to have lived to see this day." Among the well-wishers was Aubrey Williams, president of the Louisville NAACP branch and a loyal friend since the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
