Departure from Montgomery

Beleaguered by constant death threats and notoriety that made finding employment difficult, in August 1957 Rosa, Raymond, and Leona left Montgomery for Detroit. Thomas Williamson, a cousin, wired $300.00 and the Montgomery Improvement Association collected $800.00 to help cover their moving expenses. They stayed with extended family before moving to a small apartment Rosa's brother, Sylvester, found for them on Euclid Avenue in southwest Detroit.
