Early Newspapers

Newspapers played a critical role in the development of comic books and their characters which are at the heart of the Stephen A. Geppi Collection. The emergence of color printing in nineteenth-century newspapers, along with the relatively low cost and widespread access to newspapers across the country, helped to promote comics and establish them as a key part of popular culture. In fact, the first modern style comic books started out as reprints of newspaper comic strips, beginning with collecting multiple stories of a single series, then combining multiple series together to be read independently of the newspaper itself.
