The 200th Anniversary
The U.S. Botanic Garden

Botanical Art and Science

Botanical drawing was both a popular amateur art and professional science in the nineteenth century. Many of the early specimens of the national garden were gathered through Charles Wilkes' U.S. Exploring Expedition in 1838-1842. Published atlases took many years to produce. In mid-century, administration of the garden came under the Joint Committee on the Library and plans for a conservatory began. The Bartholdi Fountain, in the garden's older location below the Capitol from 1868 to 1926, was moved to present-day Bartholdi Park.
